Patent applications 2019: The German Southwest is leading in nationwide comparison

With a total of 15,230 patent applications in 2019, Baden-Württemberg is ranking first among all German states. This shows that companies from the German Southwest are well positioned for the future, said Dr. Nicole Hoffmeister-Kraut, Minister of Economic Affairs, Labour and Housing.

Compared to the previous year, the number of patent applications thus increased by 4.4 percent. With 138 applications per 100,000 inhabitants, Baden-Württemberg is also ahead nationwide when the number of applications is put in relation to the respective number of inhabitants. In April 2019, the state launched a project called PATENTCOACH BW to particularly support small and medium-sized enterprises in the legal protection of their inventions.

The figures emphasise the country's innovation leadership within the European Union: The research and development intensity – the share of R&D expenditure in relation to gross domestic product – recently increased by 0.7 percentage points and climbed to a new record level of 5.6 percent in 2017 – an international peak value. Thus, the German Southwest is the region with the greatest innovative strength within the European Union.
