The German Southwest is the region with the highest innovative strength within the European Union. Research and development intensity, the share of R&D expenditure in relation to the gross domestic product, increased by 0.7 percent compared to 2015, climbing to a new record high of 5.6 percent in 2017 – an international benchmark.

According to the State Statistical Office, Baden-Württemberg showed by far the highest innovative strength among all federal states in 2017. In addition tot hat, the share of expenditure on research and development is well above the national average (3.0 percent), the EU average (2.1 percent) and, for example, also ahead of the USA (2.8 percent), China (2.1 percent) and Japan (3.2 percent).

In comparison to 2015, this corresponds to a nominal increase of around 5.2 billion euros, i.e. an increase in R&D expenditure of a remarkable 23 percent. Compared to other federal states, the German Southwest also recorded the largest increase in absolute R&D expenditure and R&D personnel and thereby further expanded its leading position.
