Battery cell production by Varta: Milestone for the German Southwest

The Baden-Württemberg-based company VARTA is receiving 300 million euros in funding from the German government and the Federal States of Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg. According to Dr. Nicole Hoffmeister-Kraut, Baden-Württemberg's Minister of Economic Affairs, Labour and Housing, this project is a milestone for the Baden-Württemberg location.

The Federal Government and the Federal States of Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg support the expansion of Varta’s battery cell production with a total funding of 300 million euros. In addition to the development of the latest generation of small-format lithium-ion cells with even higher energy densities, the funding programme will focus on the transfer of the innovative VARTA technology to larger formats. In the future, these battery cells could be used in VARTA energy storage devices, robots, as well as in mobility applications.

The Minister for Economic Affairs, Dr. Nicole Hoffmeister-Kraut, sees this as a milestone for the Baden-Württemberg location. Thus, an important contribution is being made by the Federal Government and the state of Baden-Württemberg in establishing an internationally competitive battery production as quickly as possible. According to the Minister, the aim is to further strengthen the good position of the German Southwest and to develop the location into a centre for research, development and production of batteries in Europe.

The Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy is funding two major projects on battery cell innovation. They are implemented as so-called "Important Projects of Common European Interest" (IPCEI) and include projects from several European member states. VARTA AG is part of the first IPCEI approved by the European Commission.
