Baden-Württemberg is still popular with foreign investors

According to the state-owned business development agency Baden-Württemberg International (bw-i), the German Southwest attracted 419 foreign investment projects last year and was thus close to the level of 2017 (421 projects). A total of 5,300 foreign companies are currently located in the country.

As in previous years, Switzerland took the top spot among foreign investment countries in 2018 with 112 projects (2017: 128). Switzerland has traditionally been a close economic partner of the German Southwest due to its location near the border of Baden-Württemberg. The USA rank 45 (2017: 48), China 33 (2017: 26), Great Britain 26 (2017: 23), Austria 23 (2017: 21) and the Netherlands 18 projects (2017: 18). The following ranks are held by the USA with 45 (2017: 48), China with 33 (2017: 26), Great Britain with 26 (2017: 23), Austria with 23 (2017: 21) and the Netherlands with 18 projects (2017: 18).

One of the 45 US direct investments comes from the pharmaceutical service provider Fisher Clinical Services. In spring 2018, the American company announced that it would locate its European headquarters with initially 300 jobs in Rheinfelden. The project with an investment volume of around 35 million euros started in February of this year, the inauguration of the 6,000 square meter building complex is planned for 2020.

Concerning the most attractive sectors for foreign investors, the service sector, such as engineering offices, financial or research services, is leading with 82 projects, followed by mechanical engineering (47) and information and telecommunications technology (47).
