Companies from Baden-Württemberg exported goods worth 205.2 billion euros in 2019. Compared to the rest of Germany, the German Southwest continues to lead the way as the strongest exporting federal state. As a result of the weaker global economy, the growth in exports has recently lost some of its momentum compared to the previous years 2017 (+5.0%) and 2018 (+1.4%), but in 2019, at 1.1%, it was slightly stronger than nationwide (+0.8%) for the first time since 2015. Southwest imports increased by 3.0 percent to 183.7 billion euros. Here the growth rate was more than twice as high as in entire Germany (+1.3%).
With an export value of 95.4 billion euros, the European Union (EU) remained the most important destination for exports from Baden-Württemberg, even after the withdrawal of Great Britain from the EU. As in previous years, the most important destination countries were the United States and China. Export business with neighbouring France (+4.6 %), the third most important destination for exports from the German Southwest, was well above average.
