Baden-Württemberg is the innovation region No. 1 in Germany and Europe and occupies leading positions in industries such as mechanical engineering, the automotive and healthcare sectors as well as information and communication technologies. This is also reflected in the growing number of engineers in the state as well as the increasing demand of companies for highly specialized personnel such as engineering experts.
Thus, between 2013 and 2019, the number of employees subject to social insurance contributions in engineering professions in Baden-Württemberg increased by 25.1%, almost twice as much as the overall number of employees subject to social insurance contributions (+ 13.8%). According to the State Statistical Office, in 2019, 191,800 or 4.0 percent of the total of 4.75 million employees subject to social insurance contributions in Baden-Württemberg were working in engineering professions. The engineering density was thus higher than in any other German state. Nationwide in 2019, more than 1.03 million employees subject to social insurance contributions were working in engineering professions, which corresponds to a share of 3.1 percent.
