TerraSAR-X/ TanDEM-X Satellite Formation delivers first datasets forDEM creation
Scientists at DLR publish first DEM examples

19.08.2010 A mere month after the launch of the TanDEM-X satellite and a full week ahead of schedule, scientists of the German Aerospace Center (DLR) have now released first examples of Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) created from data collected by the TerraSAR-X/ TanDEM-X satellite formation. Although the satellites are not yet flying in their envisaged close formation yet, the DLR-experts have produced very promising first results, already showing an impressive accuracy, by selecting the ideal point in time for a synchronous data acquisition.

This exciting imagery, covering a Russian group of islands in the Arctic Ocean and a landscape northwest of Wolgograd is now available in Infoterra's image gallery (link below).

Since the TanDEM-X launch a good month ago, the distance between TerraSAR-X and TanDEM-X has been reduced to 20 kilometres and this will be maintained for the next few months. Extensive system tests and calibration activities will be carried out during this time. Close formation flying will begin in the autumn of 2010. The distance between the two satellites will first be brought to 500 metres and then will be reduced to 200 metres for synchronous data collection.
