04.08.2010 Collective site and employment agreements will continue to be valid until the end of 2012, production in Ludwigsburg will continue and, as a matter of principle, there will be no forced
redundancies before the end of 2012. Additionally, a joint committee comprising employee and
employer representatives will be established to support the restructuring process until 2012. In
return, the employees agreed to temporarily forego parts of their holiday and Christmas bonuses.
Furthermore, models for adapting working hours to the changing employment situation were
agreed on. This was the positive result achieved last week on Wednesday evening after the
negotiations between the management of Getrag KG, Südwestmetall, the regional board of IG
Metall and the Central Works Council.
„We are pleased that we have been able to achieve this positive conclusion of negotiations with IG
Metall and the Works Council. Based on this agreement, we reach the required savings volume in
order to give Getrag Group Transmissions Germany long-term prospects for the future” said Bernd
Eckl, Chief Operating Officer, at a press conference today. This enables Getrag to position itself
sustainably in the market and remain competitive on a long-term basis.
Frank Iwer, chief negotiator of IG Metall, is also satisfied with the compromise: “Considering the
difficulties we encountered at the start of the negotiations, we have indeed achieved a reasonable
and sustainable solution”. He said that employees were now protected from forced redundancies
for thirty months and all sites would be maintained. „This is a good basis to safeguard Getrag’s
future”, said Iwer. Another important element is the involvement of the employee representatives in
the restructuring processes.
An essential part of the concept is the “Neuenstein Master Plan”. The plant will be completely
remodelled and reorganized within the next 18 months. Over 200 machines will be moved and
rearranged. “Due to the implementation of the Master Plan, the plant will be designed in a more
efficient way and, thus, addresses the current requirements of customers and technologies. The
plant will be made fit for the economically efficient production of large-scale series. Moreover, it will
become the site for premium dual-clutch transmission technology within the
Getrag Corporate Group”, said Eckl.
The rising demand for dual-clutch transmissions and timing gears in the export markets has slightly
improved the employment situation. Remaining overcapacities can be compensated for by a
voluntary severance scheme, partial retirements and models of working time reductions. In this
way, the restructuring will only affect employees to the least possible extent, and the general
recovery of the economy can be used as an opportunity. As part of the concept, employee
contributions will be compensated for by way of special, profit-related payments made after the
conclusion of restructuring, starting in 2013 and continuing until 2015. „We are very grateful to our
employees for this support, because it is an essential contribution to the short-term securing of the
future”, Eckl continued.
The agreement still needs to be approved by the shareholder as well as the employer and
employee committees. After this approval, the concept is to be implemented promptly.
