Geuder AG expands cooperation with CBM
Donation for Eye Care Program in Africa

28.07.2010 Heidelberg. GEUDER AG, manufacturer of ophthalmic instruments and systems, is intensifying its partnership with CBM. Through donations of surgical instruments and systems and the provision of information and awareness training concerning visual impairments and blindness, GEUDER AG is helping CBM’s Eye Care Program. Most recently, GEUDER AG donated a surgical system to a CBM project in Zimbabwe.

With the donation of a Vitron 2020, GEUDER AG is supporting the CBM Eye Care Program in the Zimbabwean province of Mashonaland East. According to company head Volker Geuder, the Vitron 2020 has been designed specially to suit the particular needs of such countries. This system is a portable unit for the performance of pneumatic vitrectomies. Its robust construction makes it suitable for mobile usage in varying locations. Now additional types of visual impairment can be treated in Mashonaland East. Previously only cataract operations could be performed. Dr. Aaron Magava who oversees CBM’s Eye Care Program in Zimbabwe is happy about the donation which will facilitate treatment.

GEUDER AG and CBM have already worked closely together in the past. For example both are cooperation partners in the project group Cusco. This project group has been working since 2004 toward improving medical care for the local population of Cusco, a city located in the Peruvian Andes. Through the hard work and dedication of the project group and cooperation partners, a new clinic was recently able to be established there.

GEUDER AG also supported CBM in its information campaigns and awareness programs during the German Week of Sight in 2009. For example CBM set up a mobile course in which Geuder employees and interested Heidelberg citizens could experience what it means to be blind.

CBM is one of the ten largest relief organizations for developing countries in Germany. Its goal is to improve the quality of life of blind people and to provide awareness for the topics of visual impairment, blindness and their prevention. CBM is co-founder and supporter of Vision 2020 which was called into life by the WHO with the purpose of overcoming preventable blindness by the year 2020.
