Baden-Württemberg‟s high level of research and development activities and first-class innovative performance at the state‟s universities and research facilities across the region make an essential contribution to Baden-Württemberg‟s worldwide reputation in the field of innovative IT/telecoms technologies.

At eight universities, eleven specialist higher education establishments and 10 non-university research centres, scientists carry out research relevant to IT and telecommunications at the highest level. These include internationally renowned facilities such as the Karlsruhe Institute for Technology (KIT) and the Fraunhofer Institute for Information and Data Processing (IITB) run by the Hahn-Schickard-Gesellschaft in Villingen- Schwenningen and the IT Research Centre (FZI) at the University of Karlsruhe.

There are a total of 66 institutes/centres and academic departments in Baden-Württemberg whose research work covers current questions in IT and telecommunications technology and who work to find solutions to the challenges of the future.
