Baden-Württemberg possesses a significant number of research facilities which with their research and development work have specialised in various areas of environmental technology.
As well as the Karlsruhe Institute for Technology (KIT) the region has a multitude of Fraunhofer Institutes, which carry out innovative work in the areas of waste, effluent and clean air.
In addition to important contract research facilities, Baden- Württemberg also has a multitude of research institutions at the universities, including the universities in Stuttgart, Karlsruhe, Freiburg, Heidelberg, Tübingen and Ulm.
A total of 84 institutions and centres pursue research and development in sectors relevant to environmental technology.
