The great strength of the Baden-Württemberg medical technology manufacturers is their high level of innovation. More than 50% of their turnover is realised with products which have been on the market for less than three years.

A multitude of high-ranked research institutes in the state pursue research on topics associated with medical technology. As well as the Karlsruhe Institute for Technology (KIT), there are numerous Fraunhofer Institutes, Max-Planck Institutes and research facilities at the higher education establishments and universities.
