A high-performance and multi-faceted research landscape supports the chemical sector in Baden-Württemberg.
The chemical industry located in south-west Germany is highly innovative. In addition to the outstanding research performance of the major chemical companies, and a multitude of medium-sized companies, Baden-Württemberg offers a wide spectrum of institutional research facilities.
A total of 74 chemical institutes/specialist areas (including biochemistry and foodstuffs chemistry) help universities, seven specialist higher education establishments and 15 non-university external research facilities in Baden-Württemberg to achieve top ranking internationally in the area of research and development.
In addition to the first-class research landscape, the chemical enterprises in Baden-Württemberg have also shown themselves to be highly innovative. As far as R&D expenditure and R&D personnel are concerned, the chemical companies in the south- west belong to the top-ranking group in Germany. Alongside North Rhine-Westphalian and Hessen, the most resources allocated internally to R&D and for internal R&D personnel are in Baden-Württemberg.
