Synthetically manufactured short protein pieces, known as peptides, are an important tool for researchers and doctors. However, they are expensive and time-consuming to manufacture. Scientists in the German Cancer Research Centre (DKFZ) have succeeded in building peptides on a microchip. This new technique is extremely effective, as well as quicker and therefore cheaper than previous methods. This innovative technology has already received a science prize from the Foundation for German Science and will be series-manufactured by PEPperPRINT GmbH, a company set up by scientists from the DKFZ. The German Cancer Research Centre is the largest biomedical research facility in Germany and a member of the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres. Over 2,000 employees, including 850 scientists, research the mechanisms by which cancer arises, and work on understanding cancer risk factors. They provide the basis for the development of new approaches in prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer diseases.
