• Baden-Württemberg lies in second place in terms of the number of biotech businesses. Around 80 businesses have more than 2,000 employees and generate an annual turnover of around 200 million Euros.

• As in the rest of Germany, businesses in Baden-Württemberg are mostly small businesses. Around 38% of these employ less than ten people, and a further 47% have up to 50 employees.

• Around half of biotech companies in Baden-Württemberg focus on medical biotechnology. In this area, the companies and research institutes of the south-west hold a dominant position in Germany and indeed in Europe.

• The biotech sector in Baden-Württemberg is marked by above- average innovation potential and a strong willingness to co- operate.

• This geographical location has a high cluster of pharmaceutical companies and services and therefore guarantees ideal conditions for research and marketing, as well as the manufacture of biotech products.
