Biotechnology “Made in Baden-Württemberg” – a global player at the heart of Europe
Baden-Württemberg’s location in the centre of Europe offers a significant advantage in that it guarantees access to many important markets.

Biotech companies in Baden-Württemberg develop and produce high-quality technological products, making them leading players in Germany and Europe. Their biotech products enjoy high national and international demand and are used throughout the world.

Biotechnology in Germany

  • As biotechnology is a classic interface technology which has input not only from biology and biochemistry but also from physics, chemistry, process technology, material science and IT, the German biotech sector with its technologically advanced status in many of these individual disciplines, is at the forefront of all the German high-tech industries.

  • The biotech sector is made up of around 500 businesses in Germany with more than 14,000 employees who generate a turnover of over 2 billion Euros. If we include the ever increasing number of businesses which count biotechnology as part of their business, the following picture of the sector emerges: 600 businesses with around 30,000 employees generating a total turnover of more than 3 billion Euros.

  • In the field of biotechnology, Germany has become a driving force within Europe, with innovative, lucrative and marketable ideas.

  • Worldwide, German businesses hold the no. 2 position behind the USA in terms of annual patent applications in the field of biotechnology.

  • Germany„s strength within the fields of “red”, “green” and “white” biotechnology lies in particular in the “red” area, i.e. medical biotechnology. In this sector Germany holds the no. 1 position in Europe, and no. 2 in the world. Almost half – around 44% – of German biotech companies are specialists in the development of new medicines or diagnostic tests.

  • The highly innovative nature of the German automotive sector is underlined by the 1,775 patent applications registered annually for transport technologies. This puts Germany in the no. 1 position – worldwide.
