The aerospace industry in Baden-Württemberg
Baden-Württemberg is regarded as one of the leading geographical locations for the aerospace industry in Germany.

  • Baden-Württemberg has an important position in the aerospace industry in Germany, particularly in the areas of research and development and as an important location for supplier companies in high-tech sectors.

  • Baden-Württemberg‟s leading role in the aerospace sector is due in particular to its strong supplier industries with a pronounced emphasis on products relevant to the aerospace industry and its highly innovative research and development network.

  • There are more than 60 businesses in the south-west of Germany, almost a third of all companies with a presence in Germany, which have the main thrust of their activities in the aerospace sector. Together they employ more than 2,100 people and generate a turnover of around 148 million Euros.

  • Baden-Württemberg has a dense and multi-faceted spectrum of large and medium-sized companies in the aerospace industry, as well as research institutions relevant to the sector. South-west Germany has representatives from a cross-section of all relevant technical and technological fields such as materials development, micro-electronics, communications and control engineering as well as special manufacturing techniques.

  • Leading world companies such as EADS, Liebherr Aerospace or Thales operate out of several sites in Baden-Württemberg. Suppliers from other sectors, such as Behr Industrietechnik or the Recaro subsidiary Recaro Aircraft Seating GmbH, the third-largest manufacturer of aircraft seats, have successfully built up areas of business in the aerospace field. Bosch GmbH develops and produces a great variety of telematics systems and is one of the most important partners in the Galileo Consortium.

  • In the aircraft sector, the development and manufacture of high- performance apparatus and systems to equip aircraft are at the forefront. These include, amongst others, cockpit equipment such as on-board computers and navigation systems, flight and engine control systems, air, hydraulic and fuel systems, actuators and sensors, cabin fittings and safety equipment.

  • Baden-Württemberg is a centre for the German space industry. The emphasis is on satellites and payloads for various applications in the fields of science, earth observation, communications, navigation and in specialist areas such as the micro-gravitation experiments. One of the top three locations for the German space industry is the Baden- Württemberg town of Friedrichshafen. EADS Astrium GmbH develops, produces and markets satellites here and is no. 1 in the world in the area of propulsion technology. Over 80% of the German radar satellites TerraSAR-X in space since 2007 were manufactured in Baden-Württemberg.
