The European transport and logistics services provider Wincanton plc today published its figures for fiscal year 2008/2009. Listed at the London stock exchange, the company reported a 9.1 per cent growth in turnover in spite of the global economic crisis.

Compared to the preceding year, the total turnover of the Wincanton group rose from 2.164 billion British pounds (3.1 billion euros) to 2.361 billion pounds (2.8 billion euros). In the same period, operating profit increased by 13.5 per cent to 59.9 million pounds (71.7 million euros). The fact that the total turnover and operating profit in euros was nevertheless lower than in the year before is due to changes in the exchange rate of the British pound.

“Wincanton has a business portfolio that is robust in the short term and also has attractive potential for growth", said Graeme McFaull, Chief Executive of the Wincanton Group, when commenting on the group's good result. "By working even more closely with our customers in these challenging times, we are strengthening our mutual relations, improving our reputation in the industry and consolidating our market leadership."

The German company, Wincanton GmbH, was also able to record successes such as in its Solutions division for contract logistics, where numerous profitable new business relationships have been established. The market-leading intermodal area was also profitable albeit at a somewhat lower level than in the previous year. The company reacted to the drop in demand by adapting its capacities.

The Road business division was able to reduce its losses compared to the year before. A comprehensive program of cost reduction and efficiency enhancement has shown first positive results although the general cargo sector has been adversely impacted by decreasing volumes in the last few months.
