Rhenus celebrates the first cut of the spade in Mannheim for new logistics centre with customer John Deere
Rhenus, the logistics service provider, is expanding its activities in south Germany.

Rhenus, the logistics service provider, is expanding its activities in south Germany. With a symbolic cut of the spade, mayor Michael Grötsch, Dr. Volker Knickel (John Deere) and Georg Lammers (Rhenus AG & Co. KG), started the construction work for a new logistics centre in Mannheim on the 30th of June. Rhenus will use a large part of the new building for production supply and factory logistics for the John Deere factories in Mannheim. The centre is scheduled to start operating at the end of October 2009.

The new logistics facility is being built on 35,000 m2 of land. Two halls with warehouse, loading and consignment areas as well as offices and social areas for staff are being constructed. One hall will have floor space of 10,000 m2 and feature nine truck loading bridges as well as four ground-level gates. The second hall will be 6,000 m2 in size and will be equipped with several truck loading bridges as well as two gates at ground level. In addition, there will be around 6,000 m2 of outdoor storage space, 1,000 m2 of which will be covered over.

The largest customer of the new logistics centre will be the John Deere factories in Mannheim. Since 1997, Rhenus has operated the warehouse for production supply and factory logistics on the grounds of the factory in Mannheim, John Deere's largest facility outside the U.S. Now, the storage location is to be moved for reasons of space: "We are very happy that Rhenus has succeeded in finding a suitable location and hope to complete the moving process punctually in autumn", said Dr. Volker Knickel, factory manager of the John Deere factories in Mannheim.

Then, Rhenus will store up to 8,000 different articles from all over the world in a space of around 10,000 m2 in the new hall. The items will be provided just-in-time for production and will be transported by shuttle trucks to the places where they are needed inside the Mannheim factory.

"For the expansion of our logistics activities, we not only have room for John Deere but also have a further 6,000 m2 of valuable floor space at exactly the same location. We will use this space for existing and new customers", said Georg Lammers, CEO of Rhenus Contract Logistics Süd.
