The industry in Baden-Württemberg
Investments in "automotive manufacturing" and "mechanical engineering"

Investment activity in Baden-Württemberg is primarily to be found in the area of "automotive manufacturing" and "mechanical engineering". Automotive manufacturing in particular has considerably expanded its share in the last few years. In the meantime, this branch of industry accounts for over 30% of the investments in the state. In conjunction with mechanical engineering, these two key industries are responsible for around 50% of the investments of all industrial companies in Baden-Württemberg. Even compared to Germany as a whole, these two industries are in the lead and Baden-Württemberg is their regional focal point. In Germany as a whole, around 30% of investments in automotive manufacturing and the same amount in mechanical engineering is made in Baden-Württemberg.

The observation of industry in terms of official statistics is based on monthly economic data and annual structural surveys. The latter include a survey of investments made, which is the most important survey and has regional relevance. The results for 2007 represent the latest information available at the time of going to press. The data is presented on the production-facility level. This means that the results only include investments made in industrial facilities within Baden-Württemberg. Investments made by Baden-Württemberg companies in production facilities outside the state are not considered. The value of tangible assets that were purchased, self-generated or posted as assets in the year under review (so-called purchase investments) is documented.
