In the internationally renowned competition entitled "Engine of the Year Awards", engines from the Stuttgart region won in four out of twelve categories. Three awards went to Mercedes-Benz and AMG and one to Porsche. The engine awards are bestowed by a specialist British publishing company and are among the most important in the automotive industry. One of the most environment-friendly engines in the competition was the new four-cylinder diesel engine from Mercedes-Benz, which won in category 2 up to 2.5 litres. The 125 kW version of the C250CDI Blue Efficiency limousine consumes 4.8 litres of diesel over 100 kilometres, which corresponds to CO2 emissions of 127 g/km
Considerably more petrol is guzzled by the two other engines from Stuttgart that received awards. The new engine for the Porsche 911 Carrera S was named as best engine of the year 2009. With a capacity of 3.8 litres, it accelerates the sports car to over 300 kilometres an hour, according to information provided by the company. The 911 Carrera S Coupé, which has the same engine, consumes 10.2 litres per 100 kilometres. Even thirstier is the 6.3 litre V8 engine from AMG, which won in two categories.
The competition jury is composed of 64 auto journalists from 32 different countries.
