From non-scratch paint to germ-free hospitals
Nanotechnology as an engine of growth for the Baden-Württemberg location

Altering the characteristics of surfaces, making them more resistant to scratches, reducing the presence of germs on them, cleaning them more easily, rendering them dirt-repellent and enabling them to be manufactured at lower cost are all desirable aims which serve to protect the environment and can be achieved through the use of nanotechnology. One pertinent example is the vision of the germ-free hospital. Self-repairing or self-cleaning materials, anti-bacterial equipment, non-scratch paints or diffusion seals for food packaging also illustrate the possible uses of nanofunctional surfaces.

The Baden-Württemberg Ministry of the Environment has published an information brochure on the topic of "Nanofunctional Surfaces and Dye Solar Cells" as part of its series entitled "Innovation through Nanotechnology". The brochure indicates the potential for the development and use of nanotechnology by companies in Baden-Württemberg. "At first glance, the examples of products referred to in the brochure have little in common with each other or are not necessarily related to environment technology or protection of the environment", said Gönner. But, "nanotechnology not only enables technical refinements in the area of product development but also has a lot of positive sides in respect of effects on the environment in that it can contribute to resource efficiency, reduction in the use of raw materials or the avoidance of waste", said the minister.

Nanotechnology is a key technology for the development of product innovations - in Baden-Württemberg as well.
