Cooperation with industry has always strongly influenced the basic research of the Institute in terms of providing new ideas relevant to application.

Large enterprises as Daimler-Benz, IBM, Bosch, WMF, Wielandwerke and other companies based in the Stuttgart area also conduct substantial materials research. Also, a considerable amount of small and medium-sized enterprises located in this area contribute enormously to modern materials technology. This huge potential, which is strongly supported by the government of the Land Baden-Württemberg has positively influenced the work and development of the Institute since 1934.

The employee turnover stipulated in the statutes maintains the creativity indispensable to conduct research at the Max-Planck-Institute for Metals Research. Not only are former researchers employed by renowned research institutions or hold important university chairs but they are also to be found in important positions in industry.

Exchanging scientific teaching concepts and research results on an international basis and meeting colleagues from all over the world to discuss science gives important impetus to the Max-Planck-Institute for Metals Research that guarantees it a worldwide leading position within this special subject.

It is worth mentioning that the number of foreign doctoral candidates at the Max-Planck-Institute for Metals Research is highly above average. Moreover, an enormous amount of scientists from all over the world are employed at the Institute as Postdocs. When returning to their home countries, they often become initiators of continuing scientific and frequently good economic connections.

Internationally known scientists often accept guest stays with the Max-Planck-Institute for Metals Research. In return, the directors and many scientists employed at the Institute are members of international boards and committees, they are invited to give lectures, to work as visiting professors at universities and research institutes and they participate in conferences taking place all over the world. This lively exchange brings invaluable and treasured know-how to the Institute that, otherwise, would have to be created with an enormous effort.
