Mathias Mandel, responsible for development, construction and verification management of the new Zeppelin was born in Stuttgart in 1957. He spent his childhood in Echterdingen nearby the Stuttgart airport, where in 1908 the Zeppelin LZ4 had gone up in flames. This was surely one of the reasons for Mandel to begin aerospace studies.

After initial projects for Dornier and DASA he hired at Zeppelin Luftschifftechnik in Friedrichshafen, a successing enterprise of the former “Zeppelin Luftschiffbau” which produced production machinery at that time. When inquiries for airships mounted in the 1980s, first considerations about the realisation of a new Zeppelin were undertaken. Mandel combined the concepts of pre- and post-war airship architectures which led to the way the Zeppelin is constructed today.
