Freiburg – In future, Freiburg will be the first city in Baden-Württemberg to manage without electricity from nuclear power stations. As the city announced on Friday, the amount of electricity from nuclear sources will fall "to zero" as of 2008. Kassel is the only other city in Germany which is not dependent on electricity from nuclear power stations. In the coming year, just under 40 per cent of the electricity supplied to Freiburg and Breisach will come from renewable energy sources such as hydroelectric power, biomass, wind energy and solar energy. Around 60 per cent will be from combined heat and power generation on a natural-gas basis, according to the city. Freiburg consumes approximately 30 million kilowatt hours of electricity per year.
