An interdisciplinary team consisting of medics, computer scientists and economists of the university hospital in Mannheim works in a comprehensive research project for flexible and patient-suitable capacity utilisation of operating rooms.
Operations in hospitals are equally sensitive and highly complex processes which demand a high-performance management. In the interdisciplinary research project "Operating room 2010" of the State of Baden-Württemberg, the university hospital Mannheim and Mannheim University have examined the processes in German operating rooms. The goal: to improve the organisational and operational structuring in hospitals with a focus on surgical operations. In their studies the scientists concluded that the central issues in surgical management cannot be solved by the fundamental techniques and methods. Derived from these outcomes, they developed a concept for a more flexible and more patient-suitable capacity utilisation of space and equipment.
