The European Space Agency (ESA) has established a Networking and Cooperation Initiative (NPI), which aims at strengthening the cooperation between the organisation, European universities, research institutions and the private sector.

With this initiative the ESA wants to improve research for modern technologies which offer possibilities of use in space projects as well as to benefit from potential "spin-ins". The latter could emerge from technologies that are developed in areas like consumer electronics or materials sciences, or even in new disciplines like microsystems technology.
