A racing driver’s dream with its own test facility – Motor Presse Stuttgart GmbH & Co. KG

Who could be better qualified to launch a car magazine than a German racing driver? In 1946, Paul Pietsch and his friends Ernst Troeltsch and Josef Hummel founded the magazine “Das Auto” (‘The Car’), the profits from which financed their car racing. The publishing company which grew out of that magazine - Motor Presse Stuttgart GmbH & Co. KG – is today Europe’s biggest publisher of specialist periodicals.

Cars and motorbikes remain the core interests of the Motor Presse Stuttgart publishing group, originally based in Freiburg – especially in its flagship publication “Auto Motor and Sport”. The magazine covers a very wide spectrum of subjects – from up-to-date reports on world motorsport, to tests of new models, travel features, articles on sustainability and environmental impact, and the latest trends and services. In the course of a single year the magazine’s specialist team tests 650 cars and gives 50 safe driving courses. Both of these represent USPs (Unique Selling Points) for “Auto Motor and Sport“.

The main subject areas are cars, motorbikes, consumer electronics, telecommunications, sport and leisure, with titles such as “MOTORRAD“, “connect“, “Men’s Health“, “Mountain Bike“ und “Outdoor“ and a further 200 magazines and catalogues in 23 countries and on four continents. The group’s publications have the benefit of some rather unique resources, including an archive of over 6 million photos, especially from the automobile world. In addition, Motor Presse is the only publishing company worldwide to finance its own ISO (International Standards Organization) certified test laboratory – the “test factory” – where more than 2000 appliances a year are tested.

All this has created the basis for significant success at home and abroad. In 2005, the group’s roughly 2000 staff generated sales amounting to 362 million Euros, 45 % of which came from outside Germany. The figures reflect the confidence of readers worldwide in the quality of journalism to be found in the publications of this company, now based in the state capital Stuttgart.
