Substantial economic growth in THE LÄND

Despite the ongoing pandemic and supply constraints, Baden-Württemberg‘s economy recovered in 2021 and was even above pre-crisis levels in some sections.

The economy in the German Southwest grew stronger last year than in Germany as a whole. According to preliminary data from the State Statistical Office, price-adjusted gross domestic product (GDP) rose by 3.4 percent in Baden-Württemberg in 2021 compared with the level of the previous year. In Germany as a whole, economic output increased by an average of 2.9 percent. In nominal terms, the GDP of Baden-Württemberg amounted to just under 536 billion euros, which corresponds to a share of 15 percent of Germany's overall economic performance.

Following the corona-related production cutbacks in 2020, almost all sectors were on course for growth in 2021. The industrial sector in particular, as the central economic sector for the development of the economy in the entire state, grew significantly by around 7.5 percent, but did not quite reach the pre-crisis level of 2019. In the sectors of "public and other service providers" as well as "trade, transport, hotels and restaurants", however, the losses from the crisis year were successfully compensated.

For the further economic development, the State Statistical Office continues to see a decisive influence in the infection situation as well as in the war in Ukraine.
